About two weeks ago I flew to Sydney to get my French working visa. During my time I stayed with my close friend Nirvana, in Avalon, a cute town in Sydney’s northern beaches. Nirvana doesn’t really have a home base, but rather couch surfs around with her large duffle bag of eccentric clothing and random nik naks. We stayed at her friends share house, where Pencil, the lead singer of The Ruminators (check out their music! amaze!), his Californian girlfriend Petie, and a surfer guy called Sam live.
We spent time thrifting Newtown, drinking Coronas like the real Queenslanders we are and eating posh sandwiches. That afternoon, we went for Happy Hour in the city, and then made our way home to watch the sunset on the bus whilst listening to 80s rave tracks. Avalon is such a chill place. The atmosphere is totally different to any Gold Coast town. We ate at an upstairs Chinese restaurant for dinner, then drove to lookout to watch the lightning over the ocean until about 11. It kind of felt strange being a wallflower, i’m normally super chatty, but it felt nice to just listen, and observe. I don’t know, sometimes I enjoy being shy.
The next day we drove to Palm Beach for breakfast at the Boathouse, and a guy called Daniel gave us complementary food. Thanks D. Whoever you are. That afternoon was mental, as Nev and I drove at rush hour into the city and on to Bondi, whilst being directed through phone calls from Sam, who is probably the most patient guy i’ve ever met.
Two hours later..we made it to Bondi and I called an uber to the airport who ended up being really inspirational? He explained why he quit his 9-5 job and how much he regrets wasting 20 years of his life. It was refreshing hearing this kind of stuff from a GEN X.
I ended up arriving to the airport 20 minutes before my flight took off so of course I lost my sunglasses and left my boarding pass in the car.
Anyway, sydney was fun.
